I met Lloyd only once, but the unique, unforgettable occasion will always be with me. Kafia and Lloyds’ wedding, the coming together of three remarkable traditions: Caribbean, Irish, and Jewish. A very savoury stew. Allen Saxe and I have been friends for more than 75 years, and it is through that friendship that I have received family updates. My wife Bea and I first met Kafia when she was a baby. Allen would share stories about family life in Sunnyside, and how Lloyd and Kafia applied their ingenuity and creativity to build a life. Mikah and Ezra became the protagonists in a family story. Like their dad, the boys were serious Mets fans.
Of course I knew that Lloyd was Irish, but I did not know about his birthplace, Limerick City. I googled “Limerick City, and in one of the descriptions it was described as, “quirky, arty, and utterly individual.” From what I gather, it sounds very much like Lloyd.
May his memory be a blessing.

Lloyd - I am deeply saddened by your death, which has left me short on words. You were a generous and easy going host at so many family gatherings at the Canning/Saxe home. We chatted about many topics over wine and food. I wish we could enjoy more such times again. My heart goes out to all your grieving family and friends. Love, Wendy Schorr

To Kafia, Mikah and Ezra,
I am Lloyd's cousin Morgan from Ireland. There is just a year between us and he was the best big cousin ever to have. We lived in different counties at a time in the 70's and 80's in Ireland where that may as well have well have been continents away.
Every holiday however we would spend days or even weeks together, particularly in Doonbeg, trying to keep up with the bold and brilliant Ross. Lloyd would wake up with a plan for the day and it just invariably ended up being the best adventure ever. The best laid plans didn't always work out (:-). This included him getting locked in the boot of a car; overestimating how far himself, myself and Ross could get in a dingy in the bay across the road from the house in Doonbeg, and us ending up halfway between Doonbeg and Kilrush after a bike ride (:-)/
He was an absolute visionary and it was many years later that I realised that he just woke up every day with a mission to make things the best they could be for those around him, no matter what he was facing himself. There are so many tributes I could pay to Lloyd but here is my abiding one.
Lloyd had a wonderful collie dog called Flag. Lloyd made sure Flag was at the heart of everything so when we'd cycle to the White Strand beach for example, we went at a pace that suited Flag as he ran beside Lloyd, just living his best life. As Flag became poorly in his later days, Lloyd was consumed by making him as comfortable as he could be. Lloyd would phone me (lol, hard to believe that was on a land line).
When he rang to tell me that Flag had passed, he didn't say that he was upset, he asked me how I was on hearing that news.
Morgan.

Llyod Canning one remarkable gentleman who will be so deeply, deeply missed who was truly loved by everyone! I will never forget Lloyd's sweet sing songy melodic voice, such a great Irish brogue filled with joy , love and cheer. Llyod filled every corner of the Big Apple and Ireland with his heavenly aura in such positive unforgettable ways. Lloyd was so utterly impactful, inspiring, positive, thoughtful, and encouraging ! May we all strive to have just a little bit of your specialness, Lloyd.
Kafia, to you and your boys; to Llyod's family in Ireland I am so sorry unbelievable for your loss. Please know how much we all loved and admired Lloyd. He made such a huge positive impact on so many people's lives ; he will forever be in our hearts.
Lloyd was great part of the Travel Bound crew, such good fun! And on a personal level he helped me launch a new business putting the spot on the map! I will forever be grateful! Miss you so much.

Lloyd, I have so many good memories of you:
Sitting in the sunshine in our back yard in 2005, you told Allen and me that you loved Kafia and wanted to marry her. You were thoughtful, smart, responsible and, most of all, good to her. We were touched that you asked us before you proposed. We gave you our blessing without reservation.
Your wedding was such a joyous occasion. It was multicultural with a service that honored all the traditions and guests from almost every continent. We loved how your Irish family and friends blended so well with ours.
You were so proud at the births of Mikah and Ezra. You were such a devoted young father.
We loved visiting Lounge 47 and Communitea and being in those community institutions you helped create.
So many years of accompanying you to the boys’ soccer and baseball games (thank you), of beach trips, of family events.
You enthusiastically planned a trip to Ireland for you, Kafia, Mikah, Ezra, Allen and me. We all had tickets for August 2020, and the pandemic cancelled our plans. I’m sorry that we never had the chance to see Ireland through your eyes.
Sadly, you left us too soon. May you now find peace

Lloyd wasn’t just a dear friend, he was a trusted business partner; the level headed one who would quietly put away a few pints and stay relatively sane while everyone else went nuts around him! Viva Lounge 47!!
Going on a road trip with Lloyd through Utah over 25 years ago, when 3.2% alcohol was a thing, had so many highlights that have since sustained many a raucous retelling of, There once were Irishmen seeking alcohol in Moab …. Hilarity ensues!
Above all, Floydee was a gentle, good, decent human, and a great craic. Birdie num num, Lloyd, wherever you are. You are greatly missed.
So much love and strength to Kafia, Micah and Ezra.

Rest in Peace Lloyd my old friend. Sarah and I are devasted to hear the news. First met Lloyd in 1990 in Tralee RTC, and our paths crossed again in Hull, Dublin, New York, Thurles, Amsterdam, Cork and Killarney. Many a night , many a conversation. He was such a wonderful human being, kind, warm, generous and friendly.
Our condolences to Kafia, Mikah, Ezra, Tara and Ross.

I am So proud to come from such a wonderful family filled with support and kindness. Lloyds memories will live on in all of us. Any small achievements or celebration in my life was promptly followed by a message from my uncle, he was always there to support and acknowledge me and my brother and I couldn’t be more grateful for everything he did for me growing up. I have so many beautiful memories of Lloyd but none better than travelling around New York on the sub way for the first time with my uncle and my cousins.
I love you Lloyd may you rest in peace.
Millie.

So many special childhood memories with my cousins Lloyd, Tara and Ross. Long warm (and wet) Summers in Doonbeg, with daily treks across the fields to White Strand beach rain or shine. Building huge sand forts, decorated with seaweed, shells and stones, surrounded by a deep moat, which we'd sit in until the tide came in.... scaling the cliffs looking for crystals, and secluded rock pools. Hammering barnacles off the rocks to try and tempt and catch small crabs and fish out of their crevices so we could net them and carry them in our little buckets. Picnics of white bread thick with butter and slices of ham and cheese. This is just a snapshot of a typical day with our amazing cousins.... So many beautiful, treasured memories.
My heart goes out to Kafia, their beautiful sons Ezra and Mikah who Lloyd was so proud of, and my cousins Tara & Ross who I love so much.

Don't know where to start. We met on day 1 of first year in Spanish Point (Secondary School) and spent 5 memorable years there. So many stories, so many memories. His last email spoke of his pride in his family and plans/hopes for the future. Gutted to hear this awful news. A true friend and a real gent. The bed of Heaven to you old pal.
