Obituary of John Finn

John Finn born Jan 5, 1930 in Gurteen, Co Sligo, Ireland. Will be lovingly missed by his wife of 53 years, Anne (née Corrigan), daughters, Una O'Brien (Paul), AnneMarie Monahan (Alan), Margaret McMackin (Patrick), Angela O'Sullivan (James), son Patrick (Christina), grandchildren, Faith, Grace, Emma, Patrick, Abby, Lily, Hannah, John, Clare, Ella, Luke, Maeve, Ollie, Ethan & Shea. Survived by his sisters - Mary in London, Lolly in Birmingham, Attracta in Worcestershire and his brother Gerry & Lily in London. John grew up in Moygara, Gurteen, Co Sligo. He was the second child of 8. John emigrated to New York in December '57. He drove a taxi for a time and eventually secured a job at UPS and remained there for 31 years. He was introduced to Anne Corrigan and they went on to marry in Oct '68. He became a dad to his firstborn, Una followed by AnneMarie, Margaret & Angela. He was thrilled and so proud when Patrick came along. He had a very strong faith. He was a Eucharistic Minister for many years and brought communion to the sick and elderly at home. He enjoyed doing it and eventually he was getting older than homebound people he would visit. He was kind, funny and always upbeat. He was always helping others and rooting for the underdog. He was so proud to be Irish and American. He immersed the family in irish music and dancing. Girls were often in the back of the station wagon with a head of rollers on the way to a feis. He always spoke fondly of his childhood even though they had very little and were hard times. He would tell stories of his home being a magical place complete with fairy forts on the property. He loved his family and had such a great vibrancy for life. He loved the Castkills and went every summer. It always reminded him of home. He retired at 65 but was always kept busy. He loved spending time with his favorite granddaughter, Emma. He would hold her, sing to her and pray & do reiki for her. He cooked - loved making 'the pot' which was spaghetti & meatballs and he made killer chicken cutlets. He baked treacle, brown & soda bread. He also made jam. He then started attending school & sport events for the grandkids. He travelled to Ireland and England through the years. He & Anne took a trip to Hawaii, Australia & New Zealand for their 25th anniversary. He loved meeting and talking to people. He was always open to new things in life. In his early 70's he went to yoga classes and perfected a headstand. A few years after that he took up reiki. He loved to learn and was an avid reader. He was always reading a book and read several newspapers a day. His last trip away was to Lake Tahoe, California when he was 89. Eileen started helping him two years ago and she would take him out to run errands - to Key Food or the Butcher Block. He was still on the go. In recent times as he slowed down he watched a lot more television- he loved Gaelic, soccer, boxing, Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune. We are so grateful that he passed away peacefully. go dtí go mbuailfimid le chéile arís Visitation will be Sunday, August 1 from 4-8PM at Edward D.
