John was a loved neighbor at the Big Six Towers. Loved to run into him shopping or doing errands. He always had a smile
and a kind word. He will be missed by many.

When planning our first visit with aunt Annie and uncle John, the conversation on the phone went as simple as this ….John said "yes come, sure the house is here". I always remember that phrase and I knew that we were truly welcome. After a short time we realised there was a welcome for everybody at the Finn house. John - not only fed us with his ham, cabbage and prãtaí but also his kind words, his jokes and his prayers. He loved talking with Noel about Ireland, the land, the horses, the football, a little politics but also education. On one of my visits to Queens, John and I spent hours on the internet travelling around Sligo (virtually). We went to Gurteen, we looked for his old school (poss. Cloonunure) - and even looked for the Fairy Tree. We travelled all over Ireland that evening - I enjoyed that adventure so much. We all have those lovely memories if John in our hearts - we were fortunate to know John. 'Go dtuga Dia suaimhnesa síoraí dó n-anam / May God grant internal to his soul'.

I picked up this post on the internet, having already heard the sad news that John had passed to his heavenly reward. I wish firstly to send my condolences to his wife and family. Also to his siblings Mary, Anna ( Loly ) Attracta ( Tacky) ( pet names ) and Gerry. John was all of the noble virtues that have already being posted by others. I was so fortunate to have spoken to him on the phone early in 2020. His voice and sentiments were as I recalled them years ago. I was probably the last person outside his family to have bid him farewell on the eve of his departure to the States. Dominick Murray had given him a farewell party and all the old neighbours had attended. Sadly there are few of those still on this earth now. It is little wonder that he held such a passion for Irish music and folk lore. In my childhood Finn’s house was the centre for many a lively session of music and song. Not to mention the many games of 25 which made the long winter nights memorable and precious. May the Lord have mercy on John’s gentle soul. Joe Keane

When I came to work in America, John and Anne were like surrogate parents. Austin had only died a few months early, and John was able to tell me lovely stories about when they were young boys. I too remember his fried chicken, I couldn't wait to visit to sample his speciality and talk about the old days. Fabulous memories of a very special man. Thinking of you Anne and your wonderful family x

John,
It is with a heavy heart that Elisha and I leave this tribute to you tonight.
What a man…
You opened your doors to us for a full summer in 2017 and what a time we both had with yourself and Annie. It was the first time you had met Elisha and you welcomed her with open arms.
We will never forget your laugh, your ever lasting smile, your powerful sense of humour nor that twinkle in your eye. And we will definitely never forget your amazing chicken cutlets!
We will miss them good old card games, crosswords and your stories from home long ago.
Elisha often talks about you both going to Sunnyside, these really are memories she will hold onto forever.
You made us feel at home every minute we were there, we are so blessed to have been given this time to spend with you and Annie. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t get over again but we will cherish the memories we have made.
One of lifes true gentlemen
God Bless John
