I was so saddened by the death of "Gertie", she was a wonderful friend to my Mother,
Dorothy Taylor, who passed away Dec. 12th 2016. She would always take the time to call
her, even when my mother moved to Florida. I am sure Gertie, did this with lots of other
friends. She was such an inspiration to all of my family, her caring, stamina, and will, were
like no other! I am sure her throne awaited for her in heaven...truly a remarkable person.
I can hear Gertie and my Mom playing catch up in heaven!
With My Sympathy and Prayers,
Linda Flower

My condolences to Eileen and the rest of the family of Mrs. McDonald. While I did not know Mrs. McDonald personally, I am amazed and inspired by her role in encouraging women to run for office in New York City.

I'm Frank. I work at the senior center where Gertrude has come to for decades. I'm forever honored to have known Gertrude. My favorite part of the day was walking her to her car ride after she left the center. I now hope that God will walk her to the gates of Heaven and keep her safe and sound for eternity. My condolences to her family and I will always tell people what Gertrude accomplished as an activist and as a human being. RIP Gert.

I have fond memories of Gert McDonald as a "tough battler" for the community. Her commitment to civic involvement was a testament to her values and belief in the ways that individuals can make a difference. She will be missed, but her spirit will be an everlasting legacy to us all. My condolences to Eileen and the rest of the family.

I had the privilege of getting to know Gert McDonald over the last three decades as the Executive Director of Sunnyside Community Services. For years she sat at the same
place in our Center for Active Older Adults six days a week. She shared a meal with friends, advocated on behalf of our seniors, and yes, played bingo! Gert serves as an amazing model for aging. She remained vibrant until two weeks ago when she was last at our center. I admired her tenacity and her motivation to right what was wrong. In honor and in memory of Gert's tireless advocacy, Sunnyside Community Services is establishing an annual Gert McDonald Advocate of the Year Award to recognize those who follow in her footsteps. The staff and her many friends here will miss her deeply.
