Obituary of Arthur C. Schupbach
Arthur Charles Schupbach (March 7, 1924-January 15, 2016) started his life as a cheerful, smart, athletic boy in a small, loving home in Brooklyn. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Luckily for us, he did not get sent overseas, so the handsome young sailor was able to meet his beautiful Margaret at a church dance near her home in Hell's Kitchen. They married and raised five children in Jackson Heights, where they lived until he lost her at only 54. Some years later, he was fortunate enough to marry again, to Eleanor, whom he had met as a young girl and who had lost her own spouse at a very early age. After many years of raising kids, they were able to enjoy some time traveling and relaxing at the beach.
Arthur enjoyed a laugh and could give one back, in his subtle and sometimes stingingly funny way. An engineer by trade, he was the man to go to with any tough math question. In his later years, he liked nothing more than sitting in the sun reading a good book (dozens a year), doing crossword puzzles, and cheering for (and cursing) the Mets. He was predeceased by both of his cherished wives, his wonderful parents, Arthur and Catherine, and his dear brother, Edmund, and beloved Aunt Lena and Uncle Jimmy. He is survived by his children Arthur (Eileen), Christopher, Margie (Chris), Kathy (Alberto), and Jeanine (Tommy), and stepchildren Patrick (Joann), John (Diane), Eleanor (E.J.), and Amy. He was loved by his grandchildren Jimmy (Leslie), Artie (Susan), Megan (Tom), Kristin (Tom), Berto (Dary), Chris, Nick (Kelly), Autumn, Christopher (Joanna), Brian (Jen), Sean, Claudia, Michael, Vincent, Tristan, Ricky, Aidan, Ryan, Elizabeth, Claire, Patrick, and Nora, and his great-grandchildren Thomas, Anthony, Dylan, William, Nora, Patrick, Catherine, Danny, and Alexander. A long list, but he remembered them all with cards and gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Arthur is also survived by his sisters- and brother-in-law, and dear friends, Abby Montague, Catherine and Edward Kuzma, Ella O'Hara, and Nora Morales, and his many nieces and nephews.
A soft-spoken and unassuming man to the world, he was a devoted son and brother, a prince to both his wives, and a strong and gentle giant to his adoring children and grandchildren. With his small circle of family, home, work, and church, he managed to give great value to a life simply and modestly lived, and the earthly world is a lesser place without his swift and graceful footsteps.
Visitation will be Monday, January 18 from 2-5PM and 7-9PM at Edward D. Lynch Funeral Home, Inc, 43-07 Queens Boulevard, Sunnyside, NY.
Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at St. Joan of Arc RC Church, Jackson Heights, NY. Burial will be in Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale on Tuesday, January 19 following the Mass.
