It is indeed sad news to hear of Bruce's recent passing and at such a young age. Just a few weeks ago I reconnected with Kachi Akoma and we reminisced about our days working at Turrett-Freyer Architecs where Bruce's dedication to architecture was highly evident. He was an inspirational work colleague with a keen wit that made my brief time at the firm a unique blend of fun and work ethic. I recall when I met him in 1989 he has studying for the architect licensing exam. He quipped to me that when he passed and got his stamp, he would chop it in half and throw each piece in the Hudson and East Rivers respectively. That was consummate Bruce. He will be surely missed. May he rest in peace.

A few weeks ago I reconnected with Patrick Williams, a fellow I met more than 20 years ago while working at Freyer Collaborative Architects (FCA). Patrick and I reminisced about our time at FCA, especially being taught by this crazy, smart and affable guy named Bruce Garmendia. We shared stories about Bruce and how working with him established the bedrock of our development as architectural professionals. Bruce was remarkable in his willingness to freely share his knowledge and mentor anyone willing to work hard and learn from him. So far in my walk through life encountering individuals as open and giving as Bruce has been very rare. Although we had not seen each other in many years, Bruce’s legacy of completely giving of himself to the development of others in his profession lingers on in me and others who he trained.
May your soul rest in peace Big Bro…Kachi

Bruce was an extremely intelligent and talented architect and colleague of mine. Highly principled, passionate, and funny, he made a positive impact on all of us who knew him. We haven't seen Bruce in years but we still frequently think of him, his worldly views and wise conversations. He will be greatly missed.
