Obituary of Joan Monroe

Joan Monroe (née Glassman) passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 1, 2022. Joan, a lifelong resident of Sunnyside, Queens, was born on January 11, 1939. As a high school student, Joan was recruited by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company based on her superb mathematical skills. Upon graduation, she was employed at MetLife for more than a decade, where she worked on some of the earliest computers to be used in the insurance business. Upon starting a family, Joan left MetLife to become a stay at home mother. Throughout her life, Joan was active in her community in various ways. She served as the Women's Representative for the Young Democrats Association, was a member of the Anorac Democratic Club, was active with the Queen of Angels Home and School Association (PTA), was a softball coach, and was Boy Scout den mother. Joan loved her family more than anything. Going on adventures with her husband, siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews gave her the greatest joy in her life. Joan's family loved her and will miss her beyond words. Joan is survived by her son, Charles, Jr. and his wife, Nicole; her daughter, Barbara and her husband, John Glismann; her granddaughters, Brogan and Caroline; her brother-in-law, Joseph LiCalsi; her nieces and nephews, Catherine Maguire and her husband, John Maguire, Sean Maguire, William Edwards, Suzanne Glassman, and Laura Caruth; and great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Charlie; her parents, Kathleen and Saul Glassman; her brothers, Francis Glassman and Richard Glassman; her sisters, Barbara Glassman LiCalsi and Dolores Flood; and her brother-in-law Kenneth Flood. A visitation will be held at Edward D. Lynch funeral home in Sunnyside, NY on Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. A funeral mass will take place at 10:30am on Friday, October 7, 2022 at Queen of Angels R.C. Church at 44-04 Skillman Avenue, Sunnyside, NY.
