Obituary of Elba M. Benitez

Elba M. Benitez longtime resident of Sunnyside passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021. She was born in Quito, Ecuador to Rosa Villegas and Aurelio Torres. At the tender age of 17, she married the love of her life, Lucio Benitez. Together they formed an unbreakable bond that lasted 62 years. Elba's adventurous and brave spirit led her to New York City in 1969 with one goal in mind: provide a better future for their young family. She never shied away from life's challenges. She always faced them head on with strength and optimism. This was seen when she worked incredibly hard jobs that require physical strength and stamina. Her petite profile did not stop her from becoming the only woman to operate heavy machinery at the Ronzoni factory in Long Island City until the company closed in 1993. She went on to become a maintenance worker until she retired. Simultaneously, Elba felt that her most critical job was being a 24/7 fun, enthusiastic, energetic, and loving grandmother. Elba was passionate about dancing. Her dancing feet invited you to join her as she moved along the floor. She was the first person on the dance floor and the last one to leave. When she extended her hands out to invite you to dance, you couldn't refuse. Her enigmatic nature surrounded you with love and energy as you made your way around the dance floor. Knitting was her absolute passion. Every person she came across with whether they were friends or not was lucky enough to receive a handmade gift. She would knit beautiful blankets, dresses, sweaters, hats, scarves, doilies and more. The knitting needles never left her hands and her creations were called "Designs by Elba" which were used with pride. Elba was a devoted wife and mother, decision maker, chef, seamstress, and the most gentle and loving soul in our lives. She touched many people outside of the family and was known as the mayor of 40th Street. She is survived by her husband, 7 children, 20 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Elba will be missed dearly but her heartwarming spirit will always be with us. Visitation will be Friday, July 30 from 4-8PM at Edward D.
