William J. Keating Obituary

William J. "Bill" Keating, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Sunnyside, New York, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on August 28, 1942, Bill was the son of William and Deborah Keating, who emigrated from County Kerry, Ireland, and built their lives together in New York City. Raised in the South Bronx, Bill carried a deep pride in his Catholic faith and Irish heritage throughout his life.

Bill lived a life defined by faith, service, and devotion to family. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was recognized for his dedication and exemplary service by the United States Army.

Following his military service, Bill began a distinguished 37-year career with the New York City Transit Authority. Following in the footsteps of his father, Bill dedicated himself to the people of New York City and became a respected advocate for his fellow transit workers. He believed deeply in the dignity of work and in the men and women whose daily efforts keep New York moving.

Bill was a devoted member of his community. He was active in Queen of Angels parish, the Knights of Columbus, the New York City Transit Authority Emerald Society, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His commitment to faith, friendship, and service earned him the respect, and admiration of many. Among numerous recognitions, he received the Emerald Society's Lifetime Achievement Award and was later named Person of the Year for his dedication to preserving and advancing Irish-American values and traditions.

Above all else, Bill was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He shared a devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Mary, and together they built a family that was the center of his life. In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by his sons, Father Patrick J. Keating; Kevin Keating and his wife Charity, and their son Walker; and James Keating and his wife Elisa, and their children Jack and Isabella. Nothing brought Bill greater pride or joy than spending time with his family and watching the generations that followed him grow and thrive. He was predeceased by his sister, Ellen Horan.

Bill will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to the people he loved. His life was a testament to his deep faith, service, humility, and devotion, and his memory will remain a blessing to all who knew him.

May he rest in peace.
