Obituary of Mary Bridget Smyth
Mary Bridget Smyth died February 22, 2026 at Calvary Hospital of Bronx, NY. She was a longtime resident of Sunnyside, NY. Born on August 7, 1930, in Drumkeeran, County Leitrim, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget (née Fitzpatrick) Cullen. Mary was the beloved wife of the late John Smyth and the loving mother of Kathleen (Stephen), Elizabeth (Patrick), Joseph, and Patrick. She was the cherished sister of Angela, Tommy, and Joe, and was predeceased by her siblings Jack, Paddy, Kathleen, Jerry, Jimmy, Brian, and Nelly.
Mary grew up in a large and loving family before immigrating to the United States in the 1950s. It was there that she met and married her husband, John, who had also immigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland. Mary was deeply proud of her Irish heritage; she enjoyed visiting family and friends in Ireland, celebrated St. Patrick's Day in NYC, and spent many joyful hours listening to Irish music and dancing with her girlfriends.
A resilient woman, Mary fought and survived a difficult battle with cancer in her late eighties. She was a loving, caring, generous, and gentle soul who will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 am on Friday, February 27, 2026 at St. Raphael's RCC, 35-20 Greenpoint Avenue, Long Island City, NY.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery on Greenpoint Avenue in Long Island City, NY on Friday, February 27 at 12:15 pm.
