Obituary of Sheila M. Driscoll

Our beloved Sheila M. Driscoll, 78, lately of Baldwin, NY, and proud native of Blissville, Queens, NY, has passed. Sheila was the wonderfully ever-present and doting aunt to 18 nieces and nephews, 28 grandnieces and grandnephews, numerous family pets, and several homeless cats. Charles Schultz's Snoopy was her spirit animal. In addition, she was blessed with several lifelong friends and many wonderful neighbors who were an important part of her life. Sheila was the youngest of seven children born to Timothy and Mildred Driscoll. She was a graduate of St. Teresa's Elementary School, Sunnyside, Queens, and the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary High School, Sag Harbor, NY. A longtime executive assistant at American Banker on Wall Street, and even longer-time Yankees fan, she was New York City through and through. Sheila occupied the center of a great churning family wheel, and remarked often that there was nowhere she'd rather be. Official keeper (along with her brother, Gene) of Driscoll family lore and all related "receipts", she kept that wheel intact and turning, in spite of geographic and generational dispersion-- from the day her first nephew arrived on the scene in 1958 to just several days ago. Even in passing, she was its unifying center, as love and gratitude drew loved ones to her bedside, in person or via Facetime or text, where a weeklong all-day and all-night revolving visitation became the occasion to relive the many stories and memories she'd been an essential part of— usually with Sheila herself filling in any missing details. She'd belonged to all of us, simultaneously, as she will continue to belong to us in memory. Of those stories and memories, there is hardly room here to begin. In their place, we offer what would pass as urban legend were it not entirely true: throughout her adult life Sheila tracked the birthdays, communions, and confirmations of nearly fifty of us, lovingly selected and sent cards adorned with thoughtful messages in her beautiful calligraphic script and, in the case of birthdays, a dollar bill for each year lived, that impossibly found their target mailboxes on precisely the days they commemorated. Every time. God was her postmaster general. Sheila is survived by her older brother, Timothy, and sisters-in-law, Peggy, Pat, and Lauren. She is predeceased by her brothers, Eugene (Joan), Donald, Emmett (Kay) and Brian, and her sister, Patricia Schiller (Bob) Visitation will be Sunday, November 9 from 2-6PM at Edward D. Lynch Funeral Home, Inc, 43-07 Queens Boulevard, Sunnyside, NY. Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 am on Monday, November 10, 2025 at St. Raphael's RCC, 35-20 Greenpoint Avenue, Long Island City, NY. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside on Monday, November 10 at 11:00 am.
