Evelyn Washington was my mother Maria’s favorite cousin. Though she was technically my cousin too, I always called her Titi—as we do in our culture out of love and respect for our elders. I haven’t seen Evelyn in years, but I’ll never forget the way her presence lit up our home back when I was a teenager living in Brooklyn on Jefferson and Lewis Avenue. When she and my mother were together, the apartment would fill with laughter, warmth, and a kind of joy that stayed in the walls long after they left. Though my memories of her are few, what I do remember is someone who was full of life—joyous, kind, and bursting with contagious energy. I know in my heart that she is now happily reunited with my mother and the other loved ones who’ve gone before us. It was truly special to see her daughter Janina after all these years and to meet her beautiful family. My prayers and love are with all of you. Rest peacefully, Titi Evelyn.
