Obituary of Roel R. Vanderkooi

Roel R. Vanderkooi, age 80, of Sunnyside, died Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Elmhurst Hospital of Elmhurst, NY. Roel was born October 31, 1934 in Wieringen Island, Netherlands. He is the son of the late John and Romke (Dykstra) Vanderkooi. Beloved father of Ruth Ann Cain and her husband Wayne, Eric Vanderkooi and his wife Shannon, and the late Heather, all from Canada. Cherish grandfather of Spencer, Stuart, and Hayden. Loving great grandfather of Isla. Dear brother of George and Henri. Long time companion of the late Luke Adams. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Roel was a representative for Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan. He was a long time Board Member of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce and became Treasurer last year, member of the Board of Directors for the Sunnyside Lions Club, and active in many various organizations throughout Sunnyside. Roel worked side by side with Luke Adams at Dunbar Travel Agency for many years. Visitation will be Sunday, March 22 from 2-5PM and 7-9PM at Edward D. Lynch Funeral Home, Inc, 43-07 Queens Boulevard, Sunnyside, NY. Father Jerome of All Saints Episcopal Church will officiate at a Prayer Service on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at 4:00 pm at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Roel's memory to The Sunnyside Artist (sunnysideartists.org) 45-06 Queens Boulevard #166, Sunnyside, NY 11104
